Every day, my team & I meet at 9am for our daily stand-up.  We use the time to practice one of my favorite aspects of the 4 Disciplines of Execution (1-2 commitments to “move the needle”) but occasionally, we throw in something different. From time to time, I ask them to name one person, outside of our group, that they are grateful for. We don’t limit it to co-workers as we all have many people in our lives who make a difference to us. And who’s to say that someone’s spouse didn’t do something for them that really stuck out to them and made their week better?

gratefulOften times, it is a co-worker though – which just makes the experience that much richer. Everyone on the team gets to hear how someone in the organization did something that stood out. Wouldn’t that make you a little happier about your opportunity to work with that person if they showed up in your next meeting? It also gives me a chance to hear about the experience. If it’s a personal situation – maybe their child or spouse, I learn a little more about them. If it is someone at work, it’s a chance for me to learn about their interactions with others in the organization, and maybe a chance to personally thank that person for what they did to help my team.

What I have found with my team is that it is therapeutic to share something so personal as gratitude. When they say it out loud, they always have a big smile on their face. Sure, some of them probably find it a little “touchy-feely” but it gives us a chance to slow down and appreciate something positive. And unfortunately, not every meeting agenda includes a chance to have a positive moment.
